A 72-year-old Perryville man has been charged with multiple felonies in connection with a series of incidents with a minor that allegedly occurred August 2018 to Oct. 31, 2020, according to court documents.
Terry A. Carroll was charged Aug. 8 with statutory sodomy/attempt-deviate sexual intercourse with a person less than 14 years old, sexual exploitation of a minor, child molestation/third degree and possession of child pornography/first offense.
Carroll allegedly knowingly had sexual contact with the victim, allegedly knowingly installed cameras in the juvenile’s bedroom and linked the video to his phone and allegedly knowingly produced video of the juvenile victim, according to a probable cause statement.
According to court documents, Carroll’s wife initially “found out about the relationship going on between the suspect and victim by noticing his phone viewing camera system as he had fallen asleep with his phone in his hand,” according to a probable cause statement compiled by the Perryville Police Department. “
Carroll was interviewed Aug. 6 and had the charges explained to him.
“As the first allegation was [discussed] the suspect said loudly, ‘That didn’t happen and I want a lawyer, cause that didn’t happen,”’ Zahner said in her probable cause statement.
The interview was then abruptly ended, according to the court filings.
“As I was taking the suspect back to his cell he made a spontaneous utterance, ‘we all make mistakes, and I made a mistake,’” according to the probable cause statement.

The victim and a family member informed the police department the alleged actions by the defendant “has been going on for approximately three years.”
Perry County prosecuting attorney Caitlin Pistorio, citing a connection to the defendant and the defendant’s family, filed a motion for the appointment of a special prosecuting attorney Aug 7. The case has been assigned to Jereme Reyes, assistant prosecuting attorney in Cape Girardeau County.
Perry County judge Craig Brewer recused himself from the case. Scott Lipke assigned Miller to the case.
In the Aug. 10 court appearance, in which Angel Woodruff, special prosecuting attorney for Perry County, represented the interests of the state and Matthew D. Fry represented Carroll, the bond order was changed.
Making his appearance via video from the Perry County jail, a cash only bond was approved and called for “no direct or indirect contact with the victim, no unsupervised contact with minor children, (the) defendant (is) not to possess any wearpons or firearms, (the) defendant (is) not to possess or consume alcohol or drugs without a prescription,” according to the court filings.
Any violation of these restrictions on the part of the defendant will result in rearrest.
Appearing before Judge Frank Miller in the 32nd Circuit Court in Perry County Aug. 10, the defendant entered a plea of not guilty. A $50,000 cash only bond was amended along with the previously mentioned list of restrictions.
The bond amount was paid and Carroll was released from custody.
A case review has been scheduled for Friday, Oct. 15, at 11 a.m.
