Offense dooms SV girls in loss to Woodland

Sometimes basketball is just a case of making or missing shots.
The Lady Indians found out the hard way, just how cruel the game of basketball can be.
The St. Vincent girls’ offense struggled for much of the night as they fell 48-32 to Woodland on Tuesday at St. Vincent High School.
“We didn’t shoot very well,” St. Vincent coach Mel Kirn said. “Add that to our turnovers and we had a rough night. When we were able to run our offense and got good shots. They wouldn’t fall.”
Allie Patrick led the way for the Indians with nine points as no St. Vincent player was able to reach double-figures.
Haley Emmendorder had seven, and Caliyn Prost chipped in five points.
Addie Johnson led all scorers with 22 points for the Cardinals.
How did the game go for St. Vincent?
A person had to look no further than the start of the third quarter to find out.
St. Vincent trailed 27-18 at the half, and came out on fire from beyond the three-point line.
Reese Barber and Patrick hit back-to-back triples to cut the Woodland lead to 27-24 with just under seven minutes remaining in the third.

That’s when the Indians went ice cold.
St. Vincent (7-10) scored just three points the rest of the quarter and just eight in the second half alone.
“Our defense was forcing turnovers, but we weren’t making shots on the other end and that was kind of thestory of the night,” Kirn said. Kirn also felt that his team didn’t do a very good job at rebounding the basketball.
“We really don’t have a true post player,” he said. “So we have to make sure to block out down low and go get the rebound. When you have a small team, I don’t feel like we get all the calls or at least as many as I would like, but we have had to deal with that all year. We just didn’t have that much fire tonight and that’s what we needed tonight.”
St. Vincent didn’t have the best start either as they fell behind 7-1, until Prost made a jumper with 2:40 remaining in the opening quarter for the team’s first field goal.
St. Vincent fought back to cut the deficit to 10-8. Woodland went on a miniature 5-0 run in the final minute of the first quarter as the Indians trailed 15-8.
Woodland grew their lead to double digits in the second quarter and it looked as if St. Vincent created some momentum at the end of the first half when Abigail Schilling made a three-pointer at the halftime buzzer that cut the Cardinals lead to 27-18.
However, it wasn’t meant to be for St. Vincent on that night.
St. Vincent will continue their season on Saturday when they take on Perryville in the annual Mayor’s Cup event. The varsity girls are slated for a 5 p.m. tip.
“Anything can happen in that game,” Kirn said. “we will have to be ready.”
