The people of Perry County and beyond can get in the Christmas spirit early this year.
The Lutheran Heritage Center in Altenburg is hosting the 18th annual Christmas Tree Exhibit once again this year.
The exhibit will be on display from now through January 15, 2023. The display will have the theme “It’s All About the Cross,” where each tree will have a hidden cross somewhere in each tree.
“It’s a wonderful way to celebrate the birth of our Savior,” Lutheran Heritage Center and Museum Director Carla Grebing said. “We have a scavenger hunt for the crosses set up. It’s a great way for people from all over the country come and visit the museum and see our beautiful trees.”
There are 50 trees, each decorated differently, which took three days to assemble. Grebing enjoys the fact that the trees each have the same general theme.
“It’s a way to connect the trees to each other,” she said. “We started doing that a few years ago and it keeps everything consistent.”

The exhibit, which started Tuesday, has already had a few visitors.
“We have people in the house right now,” Grebing said Tuesday morning. “It’s great to already have people here to see all the hard work we put into the display.”
Grebing noted that not only people form Perry County visit the museum to see the display.
“We get people from all over the country, but certainly Perry and Cape Girardeau County to see it. What is so much fun is that when people come into town for Thanksgiving for Christmas, they come to the museum.”
The display opened Nov. 15 and will remain open through Jan. 15. The Lutheran Heritage Center is open daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. It will be closed Thanksgiving Day (Thursday, Nov. 24), Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.
“It’s the most amazing procedure to have a full team of people put these trees together,” Grebing said. “To see our beautiful museum go to an even more beautiful museum with Christmas decorations that honor Christ’s birth. It is a truly exciting time and it puts me in the Christmas spirit.”
