Life has just two certainties

Posted

Hebrews 9:27 has two truths.“It is appointed for men to die once and after this comes judgment.” The first truth isn’t doubted or argued. That truth is that we all will die. Some of us try our best to extend this physical life. Historians began linking Ponce de Leon with the Fountain of Youth not long after his death. Although Ponce de Leon’s search for the Fountain of Youth is a myth, it illustrates man’s search for some way to gain eternal life here on earth. We depend on our medical providers to keep us going and we spend large amounts of money for medical care, for health insurance and medicines. The truth becomes very evident as time passes. The most brilliant and capable medical personnel cannot prevent our physical death even with the most generous insurance plans. We are all going to experience the truth that we will some day die. We’ve heard the idiom, “The only two things that are certain are death and taxes.” There may be a few that avoid paying taxes, but nobody escapes their own death.
Our Creator has given us the gift of wisdom. Some do not use that gift in being aware of the certainty of our death. There are many things that capture our interests in this life. It is necessary that we provide shelter, clothing and food. We work hard to make this life bearable and pleasant, but that second truth is unchangeable. “and after this (our death) comes judgment.”
The average age for individuals in this country is 78.5 years. That is an average used by insurance companies, it’s not a guarantee. This information was obtained on the web but the length of eternity doesn’t appear anywhere. To my knowledge, no one has ever determined when the beginning or ending of eternity is. Eternity means time without end. Using that God given wisdom, we can compare that 78.5 years to eternity and decide which is more important, the short time on earth or eternity.

The Bible has a lot to say about judgment. Judgment will be based on what we do during this short time on earth. For those who have accepted Jesus as Lord and Savior that judgment will be joyful. For those who have not, they will find that eternity is without end, and there are no “do-overs.”
Hebrews 9:27 - 28, “And inasmuch as it is appointed for men to die once and after this comes judgment, so Christ also, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, shall appear a second time for salvation without reference to sin, to those who eagerly await Him.” (New American Standard Bible)
