Letter to the Editor: Personal liberty at the expense of life, liberty, happiness?

To the Editor:
Lately, people only care about themselves and what they choose or want. People think that Southeast Health is the only good option for the recent hospital drama and turn a deaf ear to any other suggestions. Almost nobody will acknowledge the benefits of a relationship with Mercy Health. Mercy Health has fabulous nursing school partnerships, such as in Springfield, Missouri, where students can earn money while completing their requirements. There is no reason or basis to believe that Mercy would be against such a partnership in this region.
Mercy Health’s vast resources would not only allow for a level of medical care seldom seen in small communities, but would also build a sustainable workforce for our town.

Many people have been applauding the so-called “Freedom Convoy.” I ask you, would you support it if they were protesting something you didn’t agree with, like Black Lives Matter? If large groups of people and vehicles caused your job or small business to shut down, would you still support them? If they were protesting restrictive abortion laws or unlimited gun rights, would you support them?
Thomas Jefferson, one of our Founding Fathers, wrote that “Rightful liberty is unobstructed action according to our will within limits drawn around us by the equal rights of others.” Jefferson meant that while personal liberty is extremely important, it doesn’t mean that a person has the right to do whatever they want without regard for the life, liberty, and happiness, of those around him or her.
