Dear Editor,
“That’s my dad!” Gus Walz yelled as his father accepted the nomination for vice president on the Democratic ticket. Rather than applaud this young man’s love for his dad, some chose to ridicule him. Gus is autistic with ADHD and anxiety disorder. What was immediately obvious in the moment was the tremendous love he had for his dad and how much he was loved by his family.
I’ve seen this cynicism before when Trump mocked a reporter with health impairments. Perry Countians are not bullies. We uphold community values that strengthen our social bonds. We understand that on every playground, in every church, and on every town square, we know a Gus. That is because Gus is us!
Some people obviously think that mocking others will make America great again. First of all, America is already great. Secondly, it seems to me that we ought to be making America kind again.
