Below is a letter that was sent to the Perry County Commission on Sept. 2, 2020. We've had no response.
"Today we traveled to Cape Girardeau on business and noticed that in every business we entered everyone was wearing face masks.
"This made us feel secure and comfortable as we visited various locations. We then found out that Cape Girardeau has a face mask mandate in place and has had this mandate for several months.
"We spoke with one gentleman who told us that Cape Girardeau County had 22 new COVID-19 cases this week with a population of 75,764 residents. In Perry County, we experienced double that amount of new cases in one day with a population of 18,971.
"In light of the increasing numbers of COVID-19 cases, we are appealing to you to consider the implementation of a face mask mandate in Perry County.
"It would not only be prudent but would be a show of strength and courage on the part of our county leadership to put such a mandate in place for the protection of all of our citizens.
"This would be such a small sacrifice for all of us in the interest of public health and would most certainly relieve some of the stress that those facing the public every day are encountering.
"Thank you for your consideration of this important request."
