James Leo Moonier, 83, of Perryville passed away on Sunday, July 18, 2021 at his residence.
He was born Sept. 30, 1937 in Perryville to Leo John and Bertha Mae (Pitts) Moonier.
He and JoAnn (Joan) Davis Sleyster were married on Aug. 10, 1974 at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Perryville.
Jim was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church and served in the Missouri National Guard for six years. Jim worked at McQuay Norris in St. Louis for 20 years. He then went to work at Gilster Mary Lee Popcorn Plant in the sanitation department for 33 years, just having retired in January of 2018 at the age of 80. Jim loved spending time with his family, working in his yard and garden and spoiling his puppy dog Bambi.
Survivors include three sons and one daughter, Stephen Moonier of Perryville; daughter, Elaine Sleyster Moll of Perryville; Alan Sleyster (Renita Anderson) of Perryville; and Dale Sleyster of Perryville; sister, Mary (Ray) Cottner of Waterloo, Ill.; sister-in-law, Virginia “Ginny” Moonier of Godfrey, Ill.; nine grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, two great-great grandsons and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, father and mother-in-law, Walter (Nelma) Davis; son, Michael Sleyster; grandson, Gerald Sleyster; two brothers, Vernon (Ruth) Moonier and Joseph Moonier; three sisters, Clara (Johnny) Mitchell, Mildred (Vince) Pannier and Frances “Tootie” Church; son-in-law, Bill Moll.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday, July 25, 2021 and from 6:30 to 9:30 a.m. Monday, July 26, 2021 at Ford and Young Funeral Home in Perryville. Rosary Monday at 8:15 a.m.
A funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Monday, July 26, 2021 at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Perryville with the Rev. Kevin Fausz CM officiating.
Burial will be at Mount Hope Cemetery in Perryville.
Memorial contributions may be given to charity of one’s choice.
