Indians defense dominates in victory over Blackcats

When Fredericktown running back Malachi Kyle picked up multiple first downs and plunged into the endzone to tie the game midway through the first quarter, one may have expected the game to maybe come down to the final drive.
The Indians made sure that was not the case. St. Vincent scored 30 unanswered points, which ultimately resulted in a 37-6 run as the Indians claimed a 43-26 victory over the visiting Blackcats on Friday at Indian Field.
“We definitely came out well and started fast like we wanted to,” St. Vincent coach Tim Schumer said. “It’s the same story as with Kelly last week, but we have to work on finishing games. But I’m very proud of the guys to be able to put 43 points on the board. We were really rolling at times.“
Some of those scores during the offensive run by the return game, the Indians had three kick off returns to the Fredericktown side of the field and two ended near the redzone, by Mason Light and Jesse Robinson.
“We have some guys that are fast back there and able to see the field well,” Schumer said. “Anytime you can set yourself help with good returns you have to take advantage.”
The Indians did just that with a 10-yard touchdown catch by Blake Schnurbusch to give St. Vincent a 13-6 lead with 52 seconds left in the first quarter. The defense was able to join in the scoring festivities as well as two sacks on back-to-back plays gave the Indians a safety and a 15-6 lead. The ensuing return by Robinson was returned into the redzone, but holding penalties and a sack stymied the drive into a 2nd and 42 situation at one point.

“We definitely don’t have any plays for something like that,” Schumer said. “We were just trying to get to a point where it was manageable.”
That was the only hiccup St. Vincent would have as on the next drive, Schnurbusch was wide open on a wheel route, made a defender miss and strolled into the endzone for a 47- yard touchdown, and second of the night.
St. Vincent led 29-6 at halftime when Wibbenmeyer scored on a 2-yard run and would get into the act on the defensive end with an interception to that set up a 12-yard touchdown for Wibbenmeyer on a scramble play that extended St. Vincent’s lead to 36-6 with 11 minutes left in the third quarter.
Kyle would come alive for Fredericktown as he scored two touchdowns and was the driving force behind the Blackcats run in the second half. Kyle found some running room for a 59 yard touchdown run, which was countered by Jacob Kapp’s second touchdown of the night, but then Kyle found some room with a 60 yard catch across the middle, that resuled in another Fredericktown score.
“Those scores are a little misleading because we switched our defense up with some younger guys, and with Fredericktown’s number’s they don’t have many subs,” Schumer said. “Ewe have to finish better, but I would rather have that problem because that means we have a lead.”
The victory was the third straight for the Indians as they will travel to St. Pius this Friday.
“You like to see that you’re improving every week and getting better,” Schumer said. “Three wins in a row is certainly nice.”
