Rural Perry County Fire, East Perry Rural and the Chester Fire departments all responded to a residential structure fire at 4447 Highway E at approximately 5:40 p.m. Jan. 13.
Upon arrival, flames were going through the roof, according to Rural Perry County Fire Department assistant chief Bill Jones.
“We were able to get ahead of it with piercing nozzles,” Jones said.
Highway E was shut down while firefighters battled the residential fire.
The fire departments cleared the scene at approximately 9:34 p.m.
There was heavy water damage throughout the structure, according to Jones. Due to the damage, it was determined to be a total loss, Jones noted.
“It appears the fire started in a vehicle which was parked below the carport,” Jones said.

Living in the home at the time were two adults and three children. No injuries were reported.

CABLES STRUCK
The fire department responded to the Perry County District No. 32 campus at approximately 12:24 p.m. as a precaution after underground power cables were damaged, sending smoke into both the middle and high school structures.
“A construction company hit a high voltage cable,” Jones said, noting the damage impacted the school’s FEMA structure. “It blew up a portion of the transformer and damaged the interior breaker units and main power shut offs.”
The department cleared the scene at approximately 1:44 p.m.
