A Celebration of Life was held at the St. Mary of the Barrens Church in Perryville on July 10, 2021 in honor of Gary L. Schumer. Gary was born on Jan. 3, 1952 in Perryville, the son of Herman and Minnie (Huber) Schumer.
He was married to Barbara Heberlie in 1973. She survives in Sarasota, Fla., along with their son, Nathan.

Also surviving are two brothers and two sisters: Russell Schumer of Old Appleton; Stephen (Sandy) Schumer of Perryville; Kathy (Cliff) McCune and Mary (Jerry) Schafroth, both of Perryville. Preceding him in death are his parents and brothers Roger and Allen Schumer. Gary was a 1970 graduate of Perryville High School. He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in painting and drawing from Washington University in St. Louis and Master of Fine Arts degree from Ohio University in Athens, Ohio. During his career as an artist, his works were displayed in many cities across the country. Gary worked in Ohio, Orlando as a Disney animator) and Ringling Art Institute in Sarasota. Besides being an accomplished artist, Gary played a variety of musical instruments and was a member of the once popular local band the Sarasota Trunque. Our loss, but not forgotten.
Gary’s art is in the St. Mary of the Barrens Church, Painting of Elizabeth Ann Seton, St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, Blessed Frederic Ozanam, St. Vincent and the Galley Slaves.
