Doniphan girls blow past Saxony in title game

Doniphan showed exactly why they were the top seed on Saturday. The Dons controlled much of the game as they handed Saxony Lutheran a 58-31 loss in the Class 4, District 1 championship game in Dexter.
Doniphan (26-2) narrowly defeated the host Bearcats in the semifinals a few days prior, while the Crusaders cruised past Kennett by nearly 20 points. The roles were reversed in the title game.
Saxony was held to six points or less in three of the four quarters as the Dons effectively kept the Saxony offense in check. The second quarter the offense came alive, as the two teams tied 16-16 right before halftime.

Otherwise the Doniphan defense was on point, allowing Saxony to shoot just 30 percent (11-37) from the field and forced 20 Crusader turnovers.
Saxony was led by junior Rebecca Johnson with 10 points, while senior Emma Dunning had seven points, and four rebounds. Maci Hollis added six for Saxony.
Saxony finished its season at 13-13 and will graduate three seniors (Dunning, Ashlyn Mueller, and Abagayle Britton). The Crusaders improved by four wins in the Sam Sides’ first season back on the bench after winning nine games one year ago.
Doniphan moved on to take on Park Hills Central in a Class 4 sectional.
