County adjusts transfer station hours

Starting Friday, Oct. 1, hours at the Perry County transfer station were modified to compensate for a staffing shortage.

Hours will be Monday-Friday, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and every fourth Saturday of each month, from 8 to 11 a.m.

Operation hours at the Perry County Recycling Center remain Monday-Friday, from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturday 8 to 11 a.m.

Perry County Solid Waste Supervisor Sheila Jett said the adjustment was necessary to remain within the constraints of the department’s budget, while also compensating for the fewer staff members.

“Like a lot of places right now, we are limited on help,” Jett said. “We are open more hours than we need to be to operate these two facilities effectively. We can produce the same exceptional service to the people of Perry County while doing so in a work week with fewer hours.”

The Solid Waste Board noted that although hours are being adjusted, that Perry County’s transfer station is still operating more hours than transfer stations located in surrounding counties.

“Although most waste management facilities in our region are not open on the weekends, we thought it was important to make sure we continued to offer at least one Saturday a month for local community members to have an opportunity to access the transfer station,” Presiding Commissioner Mike Sauer said during Monday’s commission meeting.
